Fatah, Hamas agree to halt fighting that has left 11 dead so far
GAZA CITY Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas announced a new truce in fighting in the Gaza Strip between loyalists of his Fatah party and the ruling Hamas movement that has left 11 people dead.
“From 11:00 p.m. (2100 GMT), there will be a return to complete calm that will allow us to return to our business and to take care of our people,” Abbas said yesterday.
Prime Minister Ismail Haniya later confirmed the ceasefire.
“We have an agreement, which we welcome, and we insisted in the presence of the head of the (Jeddah-based) Organisation of the Islamic Conference, Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, that it be respected,” he said .
“Interior ministry services will oversee the implementation of this agreement tonight and we hope that our people will wake up tomorrow and find a better situation so that we can settle the current crisis,” Haniya added.
Abbas said the deal had been hammered out “after contacts with friendly countries and friendly leaders, such as (Jordanian) King Abudullah II”.
Officials in Amman had announced earlier the king had phoned Abbas and offered to host a meeting between him and the Hamas premier to defuse the crisis.
Abbas said the Executive Force, led by Hamas interior minister Siad Siam, and the Palestinian police would supervise the ceasefire to ensure it is honoured.
Speaking on Palestinian television, Siam said “armed men will no longer be allowed to circulate on the streets of the Gaza Strip”.
He said Executive Force members would resume the positions they held before fighting broke out, roadblocks would be removed, and anyone captured would be released.
Despite the impending ceasefire, however, sporadic fighting continued late yesterday.
Dozens of members of the Ezzedine Al Qassam Brigades, Hamas’s armed wing, backed by members of the Hamas-led Executive Force, traded automatic gunfire with militants of Abbas’s Fatah party in Gaza City’s Sabra district.
Haniya earlier lashed out at Abbas for calling for early Palestinian elections.
“This call is unconstitutional and risks throwing us 10 years back. We do not accept, we reject this call and insist on the necessity to respect the choice of the Palestinian people,” he said.
In his address yesterday, Haniya also accused the US of trying to topple his nine-month-old government. |
