Pedestrians being run over accounted for the highest percentage of total mishaps
Abu Dhabi Around 240 persons lost their lives in traffic accidents reported in Abu Dhabi during the year, according to Abu Dhabi Traffic Police statistics.
This figure is an increase of 92 per cent over last year. In 2005, 125 people had lost their lives in road accidents during the same period.
Incidents of people being run-over constituted 20 per cent of the accidents. Accidents involving vehicles running over pedestrians accounted for the highest percentage of total mishaps. Out of a total of 2,320 accidents reported in the period between early January and December 10, 456 involved run-over cases.
Traffic accidents where vehicles hit the sides of other vehicles numbered 430 or 18.5 per cent of the total accidents. Accidents of vehicles overturning formed 15 per cent or 352 of the total number of accidents. Around 545 vehicles were reported to have cut lanes, causing 23 per cent of accidents.
The figures cited negligence and carelessness to be responsible for 318 accidents or 13.7 per cent of total accidents. Over the said period, 249 motorists were booked for jumping the red signal.
Some 239 accidents were caused by motorists failing to keep a safe distance from other vehicles and 236 accidents happened because motorists did not give priority to pedestrians crossing the road.
Motorists entering the road suddenly initiated 131 accidents, tyre bursts caused 82 accidents and drunken driving was responsible for 60 accidents. |
