All calls to cell numbers without the 050 (Etisalat) or 055 (du) will be rejected.
Dubai The 050 prefix requirement comes into effect today and UAE residents are gearing up to change their old ways and punch in those extra three numbers before making calls to cellphones.
According to student Dasney Pereira who is a Dubai resident, his cell phone list has already been updated. “Many of my friends have also registered for du connections and maybe I’ll be using the 055 prefix soon too,” he said.
Aditya Singh, a call centre executive and resident of Abu Dhabi is now tired of listening to the automated message that plays in Arabic and English when the prefix is not dialed. “I haven’t had the chance to add the prefix to numbers in my phone book. Out of habit you just end up dialing the number with the 050,” he said.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority brought forth this requirement to level the playing field between existing telecom giant Etisalat and new competitor du. All calls to cell numbers without the 050 (Etisalat) or 055 (du) will be rejected. |
